2023 North Indian Ocean Cyclone Season Animation.

The 2023 North Indian Ocean cyclone season was one of the most active and destructive in recent years. Here are some key details :

Activity : It was an above-average season, with officially 9 depressions and 6 cyclonic storms forming (unofficially 12 depressions & 9 tropical storms). This tied for the most active season since 2019.

Intensity : The season also packed a punch. It was the deadliest since 2017, largely due to Cyclone Mocha. It had the second-highest accumulated cyclone energy (ACE, 63.27 Units) on record, behind only 2019, indicating a higher number of powerful storms. Notably, it also tied the record for the most extremely severe cyclonic storms. (with three, officially, and four, unofficially)

Cyclones : Some of the named cyclones included :

Cyclone Mocha (May 7-15) : This extremely severe cyclonic storm caused widespread damage and loss of life in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bangladesh, East & Northeast India, and even China.

Cyclone Biparjoy (June 4-20) : This extremely severe cyclonic storm made landfall in Gujarat, India and caused damage in Pakistan as well.

Special Feature : During the monsoon in 2023, we, at Weather Analyser, with the help of Weatherbhau Saurabh B (in X), jointly worked on a new feature of unofficially naming monsoonal lows/systems in an alphabetical order, to help creating awareness amongst people. While some of them are being featured in this animation, some of them which became depression and subsequently into a tropical storm thereafter.
