Elon Musk stated that the energy system will require three times the amount of electricity currently available to provide a sustainable future as the US economy shifts toward greater electrification.

According to his estimates, the nation’s electrical needs would triple by 2045 and then expand exponentially beyond that.

Musk added that electric freight cars would not be far off in the future. Compared to diesel trucks, freight vehicles are more energy-efficient and have the capacity to partially recover their energy expenditures. Tesla is developing enough batteries for delivery trucks, and by the end of the year, they ought to have some sort of electric freight battery.

Since iron is a material that is widely available in the US and is used to make batteries, there should be no obstacles in the way of the battery supply chain. Since lithium is not a substance that is manufactured in large quantities in the US, he suggested that easier-to-obtain elements may be used in its stead to boost availability.

According to Musk, stationary batteries, electric vehicles, and sustainable power sources including solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear power are the three cornerstones of a sustainable energy future.

“We’ll have a sustainable future for as long as the sun shines and the wind blows once we have those three pillars in place,” he stated.
Getting the permissions to construct the infrastructure and power plants required to keep up with the expansion of the electric grid was the challenge, he added.

“We’re practically making construction illegal in this country, especially in California,” he stated. “It’s like Gulliver’s Travels. Each one of those regulations by themselves may not be so bad, but it’s like a thousand little strings holding the giant of America down.”

Nevertheless, Musk stated that his estimate of the demand is considerably more than what power generators and utility corporations believe it would be.

Creating and installing new technologies to help deliver power from the grid to customers and to preserve grid stability will be necessary to manage that tremendous rise in demand for electricity. Above all, as the nation develops, Musk stated, cooperation between electricity producers, distributors, and their clients would be necessary.

Meanwhile, remote regions could benefit from the use of renewable energy provided by small modular reactors and microreactors with a power generation capacity of less than 20 megawatts (MW).
