The reality of living in Alaska is the possibility of experiencing a wildfire. Thus far there has been 36 human-caused fires this season.

“At this time of year, a lot of our fire causes are just that type of thing where people are trying to clean up their yard,” says Norm McDonald, Deputy Director of Fire Protection for the Division of Forestry Fire and Protection. 

There are a few things you can do to prepare and protect your home.

“Making sure you remove your firewood stacks away from the home and that yard debris that might be flammable,” said McDonald. 

“Cleaning out your gutters. If you’re going to be doing some landscaping, it’s really good. If you line your property, whether it’s your house or some of your outbuildings, maybe put gravel or stones around the edge leading up to the edge of your home. That’s a really good way …
