Uninsured Slidell tornado victims face difficult recovery [Video]

SLIDELL, La. (WVUE) – Some Slidell residents are struggling to clean up and rebuild after the April 10 tornado without the benefit of insurance. Many say the cost of premiums was just too high and they decided to go without.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry declared a disaster area, which is expected to prompt more state assistance for a region where dozens of structures like the Courtney Heights apartment complex are in various stages of distress. But residents without insurance are facing an especially tough time.

The debris is stacked high along Kostmayer Avenue, just off Old Spanish Trail, where the EF-2 tornado did heavy damage. Abney Elementary and all area schools are back open, but some homeowners are having to do repairs themselves.

Outside the Robertson home, the roof and windows will need to be replaced, as will a waterline which was cut by a fallen tree. They are trying …
